| Born and educated in Lancashire; became a full time writer, specialising in walking, climbing and more general travel. Visited many countries, either privately or as a guest of tourist boards or travel companies. Formerly the editor of Climber magazine and editorial adviser to Holmes McDougall, I named and helped to launch The Great Outdoors (now TGO). Founder and editorial director of Cicerone Press, but my editorial days are behind me now.
