| I am a freelance writer, photographer, and film-maker. Trained as an archaeologist, I also run a specialist travel company, and regularly give talks about travel and my documentaries.
|
In 1994 I walked 2,000 miles across Turkey, retracing the route of Alexander the Great, and in the process fell in love with the country, its people, and its ancient civilizations. Since 1996 I have run Peter Sommer Travels, a UK-based specialist tour operator, taking small groups on archaeological tours and gulet cruises in Turkey, Greece and Italy.

| As a Producer/Director I have worked on many acclaimed BBC historical documentaries, including In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great(BBC/PBS), Commanding Heights: the Battle for the World Economy (PBS/BBC), and Millennium: A thousand years of history (BBC/CNN). My most recent 12 part series, Tales from the Green Valley, about five experts working a Welsh farm as it would have been 400 years ago, was shown to rave reviews on BBC2 in the autumn of 2005.

I have written articles on a range of subjects, from travel to history, farming to film-making, for a variety of newspapers including The Times (UK), The Brisbane Sunday Mail (Australia), & The South China Morning Post (Hong Kong). My features have also been printed in an array of magazines and specialist publications including Cruise Magazine, Abroad, Retirement Today, Emerging Turkey, Archaeological Diggings, Deckchair, The Good Holiday Guide, The Travel Magazine, Countryman etc.
