After training as a geography teacher Pete worked for a year in formal education before getting a job for the Peak District National Park at their education centre Losehill Hall. Whilst there he led walking and navigation courses which set him up for a freelance career from 1995 onwards. He established Peakland Walking Holidays, whilst writing for a number of outdoor publications and freelancing for BBC Radio. He was launch editor of Peakland Walker until the publication was sold. For 17 years he also led Country Walking's readers holidays to numerous foreign walking destinations.
With the publication of his first navigation book, he was sponsored by Silva UK Ltd to run the Silva Map and Compass Courses. Over 200 people a year attend his Peak District courses.
