Paul started hill walking in his teens in the Forest of Bowland in the north of England, followed by rock climbing, caving, mountaineering and skiing in the Lakes, Yorkshire Dales, Wales, Scotland and abroad.
He was a member of the Royal Marine Commandos from 1974 to 1980, spending much of that time in 45 Commando, which was a dedicated Mountain and Arctic Warfare unit. During his time with 45 Commando he qualified as an Arctic Survival Instructor.
In 1980 Paul went to live and work in Cumbria as a police officer. He was a member of Penrith Mountain Rescue Team for seventeen years, and also a member of the Search and Rescue Dogs Association with a graded search dog.
In 1983 he passed his assessment for the Mountain Leader Award (Summer), and is currently a member of the Mountain Leaders Training Association
Paul “retired” in August 2005, and now has the time to follow his passion for the outdoors and the hills.
As well as leading walks for his own business (Hillcraft Guided Walking), Paul also contributes routes to the "Walking World" website (Walkingworld.com), and writes guidebooks for Discovery Walking Guides. When he isn’t doing all that, he walks for fun with his wife, Chris.
Over the past 40 years Paul has walked, climbed, run, caved or skied in most of the mountain areas of the UK as well as Norway, France, Italy, Spain and Austria.
