| I was born and bred in Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland (now Cumbria), was educated at Appleby Grammar School and served in the Royal Navy, mainly on North Atlantic convoys. I was happily married for 44 years to Elizabeth Sharp, who died in 1997. We had a son, David, who lives in Abingdon and a daughter, Barbara, who lives in Oakham; I have five grandchildren of whom I am very proud. I have lived in Darlington for over 50 years, during which time I have quartered Northern England on foot and become a stanchion at the Civic Theatre.
