About the Guild
The guild was founded in 1980 by a group of like-minded writers with a direct interest in equipment and clothing for the outdoors. Within five years it had expanded hugely, and was a significant association of writers who specialised in writing about the outdoors.
Later, photographers started to join the ranks, and today membership of the guild is open to writers, journalists, photographers, illustrators, broadcasters, film-makers, artists, publishers and editors, actively and professionally involved in sustainable activities in any outdoor setting.
By ‘active’ the guild means that members should operate in one or more of those fields of activity on a reasonably regular basis throughout each year.
By ‘professional’ it means that its members should at all times endeavour to work to the highest standards, in a businesslike manner, and with integrity.
Membership of the guild is not restricted to people living in the UK. Anyone can join, provided they meet the membership criteria and can demonstrate that they are indeed active in the world of outdoor writing and photography.
